Do you No What a TPMS Is ?

Do you recognize the symbol here? It lights up in your instrument panel and looks like a U-shaped pictograph with treads and an exclamation point in the middle. Do you understand what it means now? If you guessed a low tire-pressure warning, you are right. If you didn’t recognize the symbol, that’s also understandable because one out of three drivers do not, according to Schrader, a company that makes tire pressure monitoring systems. The warning for the TPMS lights up when one or more of your vehicle’s tires is 25% below the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. The system is now required on all vehicles starting with the 2008 model year. The issue here seems to be that the public hasn’t been properly educated on the warning symbol, which is supposed to be “idiot proof” and understandable across a wide variety of cultures and languages. Yet 46% of drivers couldn’t figure out that the icon represents a tire and 14% thought the symbol represented another problem with the vehicle entirely, according to Schrader. As we said earlier in the week, properly inflated tires are vitally important to your safety. Low pressure will affect your braking, acceleration, stability, cornering and fuel economy. The government instituted the TPMS mandate after the Bridgestone/Firestone tire failures on the Ford Explorer in 2000, a controversy that was partly attributed to inadequately inflated tires.

BEIJING : Thousands of vehicles were tied up in a 62-mile traffic jam leading to Beijing that has lasted NINE DAYS. The Beijing-Tibet expressway slowed to a crawl on August 14 due to a spike in traffic by cargo-bearing heavy trucks heading to the capital, and road work. The jam between Beijing and Jining city had given birth to a mini-economy selling stranded drivers water and food at insane prices.

Chrysler Group LLC is recalling about 367,350 Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans, citing airbags that may inadvertently deploy. Chrysler said it is recalling some of the 2008 model year minivans because water leaks may cause the airbag warning light to illuminate and the airbags to inflate. The recall was posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Web site today.



Volkswagen AG is recalling 377,286 cars in the United States, citing fire risk from fuel-supply lines that may chafe and leak. VW is recalling Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Golf, Rabbit, New Beetle and New Beetle Convertible cars, it said in a letter posted today on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Web site. “It’s a voluntary safety recall,” said Kerry Christopher, a spokesman for Volkswagen at its U.S. headquarters in Herndon, Va. “There haven’t been any reports of injuries or fires that have resulted from this.” The recall applies to model years 2007 to 2009 of Jettas, Golfs and Rabbits and model years 2006 to 2010 of Beetles. Some Jettas from the 2009 model year are also under investigation by the U.S. auto-safety regulator after it received reports of engines stalling without warning while the cars are moving.

Engineering students from Ohio State made a trip out to the Bonneville Salt flats to see how fast their Lithium-ion battery-powered Buckeye Bullet 2.5 could go. With batteries provided by A123 Systems and engineering back-up from Venturi in Europe, the OSU team was ready to hit the salt. The OSU team was frustrated early on, however, by several aborted runs and days of heavy wind—finally completing just two clean passes this past Monday afternoon. The two runs the Bullet blitzed across the measured mile at 286 and 297 mph. Tuesday, the team made another two runs resulting in a new record: 307.7 mph.

The mechanic who served as the symbol of GM's dealer service brand for 37 years will be Retired as of Feb. 1 in favor of the new name "certified service" for each of GM's Service Departments Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. The company said Tuesday. "This is more than a name change. It is a declaration of our commitment to our customers," Steve Hill, vice president of customer care and after-sales services for GM, said in the statement. The company said the change will come with increased service adviser and technician training and more work on customer satisfaction, with hopes that the customers will return to the dealers for service. The Detroit automaker started the Goodwrench service brand in 1974.

DETROIT (Reuters) -- Forget the Super Bowl: Ford's marketing chief Jim Farley says he can get more for less on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.If Farley is right, millions of hits for Ford Motor Co. on social media Web sites will dwarf the impact of ads broadcast during the National Football League's February championship game -- high-profile space selling for $3 million for 30 seconds. "Customers are spending as much time with the mobile smart phone or online as they are watching TV now, so our advertising dollars have to flow to where the people are," Farley said in an interview. Under Farley, 48, who joined Ford from Toyota Motor Corp. in 2007, the No. 2 U.S. automaker has bet bigger on the emerging category of digital advertising -- including Web sites social media -- than any of its rivals. Farley has taken the approach credited with the early success of the youth-oriented Scion brand he launched at Toyota and applied it to the makeover of an established auto brand. He is betting Ford can use Facebook and Twitter to accelerate the word-of-mouth recommendations long familiar to the auto industry and help the blue-oval brand connect with younger and richer people. Farley said he learned at Scion that the only way to push past consumer skepticism is "to break into their world." "You have to shove your way in there. The way we do that is to break down myths. Most passenger vehicles are now equipped with "black box" devices that record data immediately before, during, and after a crash. these event data recorders, or EDRs, can help police and investigators reconstruct what happened in a crash and why. They record information such as vehicle speed, throttle position, air bag deployment, whether brakes were applied, and if the driver was wearing a safety belt. First introduced by General Motors in basic form on air bag-equipped models, by the 2005 model year EDRs were being used by various manufacturers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) says more recent data shows all new cars have some form of EDR. But the specific information gathered varies by auto manufacturer, and some companies make it easier to retrieve data than others. Back in 2006, NHTSA mandated that all new vehicles equipped with EDRs by the 2013 model year must make the information standardized and readily accessible by authorities. While the devices can undoubtedly aid with crash investigation, privacy issues have been raised about the use of EDRs. According to NHTSA, captured data is the property of the vehicle owner. But even on vehicles where it is accessible, special tools are required to get it. The IIHS says police or investigators can access the data with the owner's consent, or can obtain a court order to gain access if the owner refuses.

Ford produced the Marauder as a high-performance version of the Mercury Grand Marquis sedan. The Marauder built in 2003–2004 targeted the 1994–1996 Chevrolet impala SS in being a contemporary full-size "muscle sedan."
The Mercury Marauder had a naturally aspirated 4.6 L V8 producing 302 hp and 318 ft·lbf of torque; this engine had many parts — including heads, cams, block and rotating assembly — in common with the 2003–2004 Mustang Mach 1. The Marauder featured a dual exhaust system with unique tailpipe tips, with custom designed chassis and suspension modifications – such as moving the rear shocks outboard of the frame-rails, which were later made available for the Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis. The Marauder was fitted with the 4R70W 4-speed automatic in 2003 and received the upgraded 4R75W 4-speed automatic for 2004. The limited slip differential with a 3.55 rear axle ratio was borrowed from the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, as well as the aluminum drive shaft.

The GMC (vandura) used by the A-Team, with its characteristic red stripe, black and red turbine mag wheels, and rooftop spoiler, has become an enduring pop culture icon. Only six vans were used for the show that ran from 1983-1987. Early examples of the van had a red GMC logo on the front grille, and an additional GMC logo on the rear left door. Early in the second season, these logos were blacked out. It is a common error that the van is said to be all-black, whereas in fact the section above the red stripe is metallic gray; this error was even continued on most toy models of the van. The angle of the rear spoiler can also be seen to vary on different examples of the van within the series. Additionally, some versions of the van have a sunroof, whereas others, typically those used for stunts do not. California Digital ads on License plates

The California Legislature is considering a bill that would allow the state to begin researching the use of electronic license plates for vehicles. The move is intended as a moneymaker for a state facing a $19 billion deficit.
The device would mimic a standard license plate when the vehicle is in motion but would switch to digital ads or other messages when it is stopped for more than four seconds, whether in traffic or at a red light. The license plate number would remain visible at all times in some section of the screen.

What's an O2 sensor ?

An Oxygen sensor (O2) is a chemical generator. It is constantly making a comparison between the Oxygen inside the exhaust manifold and air outside the engine. If this comparison shows little or no Oxygen in the exhaust manifold, a voltage is generated. The output of the sensor is usually between 0 and 1.1 volts. All spark combustion engines need the proper air fuel ratio to operate correctly. For gasoline this is 14.7 parts of air to one part of fuel. When the engine has more fuel than needed, all available Oxygen is consumed in the cylinder and gasses leaving through the exhaust contain almost no Oxygen. This sends out a voltage greater than 0.45 volts. If the engine is running lean, all fuel is burned, and the extra Oxygen leaves the cylinder and flows into the exhaust. In this case, the sensor voltage goes lower than 0.45 volts. Usually the output range seen seen is 0.2 to 0.7 volts.

According to the National Motorists Association (NMA), some municipalities have been caught shortening the time in which yellow lights are on in order to generate additional revenue from tickets issued to motorists caught on traffic cameras running red lights. Big cities reap millions in revenue from the cameras, which cost about $100,000 to install. The 30 year-old Columbian native and former model led a group of females flying cocaine from Argentina to Europe via Cancun, Mexico, the paper reports. According to La Nacion, Valencia's group of women had the unique characteristic of being pretty, but not flashy, and were getting paid $5,000 for each drug smuggling trip.

Mercedes V8's are going Twin Turbo

The normally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 found in the current Mercedes-Benz AMG lineup will be replaced by a twin-turbo 5.5 V8 Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the board at Daimler AG Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, said that the current engine will be replaced starting late next year. AMG vehicles won't be the only Mercedes models getting turbocharged next year. According to Dr. Weber, all 2011 Mercedes-Benz models with V8 engines will be turbocharged

Joey Logano won the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown for the second time in three years Saturday night as the 19-year-old held off 16-year-old Sergio Pena at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, Calif.
Logano battled Pena for the lead throughout the 225-lap event for NASCAR K&N Pro Series cars from both the East and West divisions. Pena, a 2010 member of NASCAR’s Drive For Diversity program through Revolution Racing, was competing in his first event in an East or West series car.

GM looking to take toyota customers

General Motors is hoping to take advantage of the Toyota’s stuck accelerator pedal recall. Millions of cars recalled and now a stop on sales for eight different Toyota models Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Matrix, RAV4, Sequoia, and Tundra. GM is offering $1,000 rebates or up to $1,000 to help pay off current leases on Toyota vehicles, as well as 0% financing on most of its 2009 and 2010 models for Toyota customers. According to GM, its own dealers are receiving hundreds of calls and emails from Toyota customers seeking help.
