What is a Restrictor plate ?

NASCAR's Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series currently uses restrictor plates at Daytona International Speedway and Talledaga Superspeedway. The NASCAR Sprint Cup restrictor plate reduces engine power from approximately 750 hp to approximately 430 hp.
A restrictor plate is a square aluminum plate that has four holes drilled into it. Hole size is determined by NASCAR and varies between 0.875 inches and 1 inch (2.2 to 2.5 cm). Restrictor plates are placed between the carburetor and the intake manifold to reduce the flow of air and fuel into the engine's combustion chamber reducing horsepower which slows both the acceleration and the overall top speed.
Rusty Wallace tested a car at Talladega Superspeedway without a restrictor plate in 2004, reaching a top speed of 228 mph on the backstretch and a one-lap average of 221 mph While admitting excitement at the achievement, Wallace also conceded, "There's no way we could be out there racing at those speeds... it would be insane to think we could have a pack of cars out there doing that."

Mazda's News

Mazda Motor Corp developed a six-speed automatic transmission that can drastically improve fuel efficiency. The transmission comes in two types: a medium-torque type for gasoline vehicles and a high-torque type for diesel vehicles. Mazda expects that the medium-torque type will improve fuel efficiency by 7% compared with existing medium-torque five-speed automatic transmission's and the high-torque type will enhance fuel efficiency by 4% compared with existing high-torque six-speed automatic transmission's. Both of the types will be manufactured at the company's own factories, it said.
The new six-speed automatic transmission is called "Skyactiv-Drive" and is part of the "Skyactiv," a next-generation technology that Mazda announced on Wednesday. The improvement of fuel efficiency was realized by expanding the "lock-up" area and reducing internal resistance. Furthermore, for a smooth gear change, Mazda employed a linear solenoid valve that finely controls a mechanical clutch and an electronic control unit.

No rookie of the year in 2011?: NASCAR will not allow a driver to earn rookie-of-the-year honors if the driver has not declared to run for the season championship in that series, NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said Thursday. That means that rookie #21-Trevor Bayne will not be allowed to run for the Cup rookie award this year. Bayne, who will run at least 17 races for Wood Brothers Racing and was potentially the only rookie in the Sprint Cup series, is competing full time for the championship in the Nationwide Series for Roush Fenway Racing.

Super Bowl MVP Wins 2011 Camaro Convertible

After discontinuing its program of awarding a Cadillac to the Super Bowl MVP last year, GM is back in the game with the announcement that this year's MVP will get a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible. The Camaro Convertible goes on sale in February and the game is exactly timed with the availability of the car, said David Caldwell, Chevrolet spokesman. The (MVP) can equip the car in his own manner. The MVP will get a 426-horsepower SS model with an RS package that includes such items as 20-inch wheels, a spoiler, leather interior and a 10-speaker premium audio system.
GM has made a renewed commitment to linking its name with high-profile sporting events. Last summer, GM reacted swiftly when Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga was robbed of a perfect game after a blown call by an umpire. The automaker showed up at Comerica Park the next day and presented the pitcher with the keys to a cherry red 2010 Chevrolet Corvette.

Toyota Motor Corp.- secretly bought vehicles it found with speed-control defects to hide unintended-acceleration problems from safety regulators and the public,(FUDJULATED) a revised lawsuit claims. The repurchase transactions included strict confidentiality agreements barring consumers from disclosing the problem to anyone and from suing the automaker, according to the amended class-action complaint. The new complaint also cites internal company records documenting instances in which Toyota technicians or service managers replicated speed-control problems like those reported by customers. And it says the company's confirmation of at least one clearcut case of sudden unintended acceleration was concealed rather than reported to federal auto safety regulators. The enlarged lawsuit, now more than 700 pages long plus hundreds of pages of attached exhibits, was filed on Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, California It builds on a case consolidated over the summer from dozens of consumers and businesses claiming economic losses, including diminished vehicle resale values, stemming from complaints of Toyota cars and trucks racing out of control.
