On January 29, 1886, Carl Benz filed a patent application (number 37435) with the Reich Patent Office in Berlin Germany for his "gas engine-powered vehicle," a three-wheeled motor car. This marked the birth of the automobile. At the same time, Gottlieb Daimler was developing the first four-wheeled motor car. Working independently of each other, the two founding fathers of today's Daimler AG and its Mercedes-Benz brand laid the foundation for all present-day passenger cars, commercial vehicles and buses. In 2011, Mercedes celebrates the anniversary of the invention of the automobile under the banner "125 years of innovation."
